Creating Variation listings from existing item

Hello -

Can I turn a currently running single item into a variation listing? Would prefer not to have to end the listing.

If that is not possible, then next question is can I turn a non-running, but previously listed, listing into a variation?

Or is it only possible to create a variation listing by starting from a brand new item?
